Team chat and voice notes
Global, group and direct channels, mentions, attachments, read receipts and hold-to-record voice notes.
Team chat lets the crew talk without leaving the map. There is one channel for everyone, a channel for each of your groups, private one-to-one conversations, and a small comment thread inside every task. Messages arrive live, photos and voice notes are supported, and recent conversations stay readable when the connection drops.
Open chat#
Press C, or choose Chat in the navigation. The drawer opens with a channel list; pick one to open its conversation, and use the back arrow on a phone to return to the list. A red badge on the chat button counts unread messages across all channels, and a small pop-up appears when a message arrives while the drawer is closed. Tapping the pop-up opens that conversation.
Channels#
| Channel | Who is in it |
|---|---|
| Global (marked #) | Everyone on the instance who can use chat. |
| Group channel (marked ◆) | The members of one custom group. You see a channel for each group you belong to, and no others. |
| Direct message (marked @) | Just you and one other person. Nobody else, including administrators, can read it. |
Group channels are created automatically the first time they are needed, so a new group does not need any setup. If someone leaves a group they lose access to that group's channel, including its history.
Start a direct message#
- In the channel list, choose the new-message button.
- Type in Search people… to narrow the list, which shows up to 50 names. A green dot means the person is online.
- Choose a name. The conversation opens, ready for your first message.
Send messages#
Type in the Message… box and press Enter on a computer; Shift+Enter adds a new line. On a phone, use the send button. Messages can be up to 4,000 characters. The button at the right of the box does two jobs: when the box is empty it is a microphone, and as soon as you type text or add a photo it becomes Send.
- Photos: use the attach button inside the box. You can add up to four photos to one message. See Mobile use and offline for photo budgets.
- Mentions: type @ followed by a name to get a suggestion list, then choose a person. Mentions are shown highlighted in the message.
- Typing: a line under the thread shows who is typing.
If you send while offline the message waits and is delivered when the connection returns. Each message carries a hidden identifier so that a retry never produces a duplicate.
Voice notes#
Press and hold the microphone, speak, and let go to send. The first time, the browser asks for permission to use the microphone. A recording shorter than about a third of a second is thrown away, so an accidental tap does nothing, and a clip that ends up too large is refused with a Message too long notice, so keep voice notes short, in the order of a minute.
A voice note appears as a player with play and pause, a progress bar and the length. Your device keeps a copy of every voice note you have played, so it still works after the server clears it.
Edit and delete#
Tap a message to reveal Edit and Delete. You can edit or delete your own messages. Administrators can delete other people's messages to moderate. A deleted message is replaced by Message deleted, and deleting a message that has photos or audio removes those files too. Edited messages are marked as edited.
Read receipts#
In direct messages, your own messages show ticks:
| Ticks | Meaning |
|---|---|
| One grey tick | Sent and stored. The other person is not online. |
| Two grey ticks | Delivered: the other person is online. |
| Two blue ticks | Read: they have opened the conversation since your message. |
Group and global channels show unread counts on the channel list instead of per-message ticks.
Comments on a task#
Every task has its own comment thread in its panel. It is separate from the chat drawer and never appears in the channel list. The panel shows the latest messages; choose View all for the full conversation in its own window. Task comments take text and photos, but no voice notes. Only people who can see the task can read or write in its thread, so a private task stays private. See Tasks.
Offline#
Chat keeps a local copy of the conversations you have opened, so you can still read them with no connection. New messages from others appear once you are back online, and the badge updates then.
