Search and the command palette

Find notes, tasks and areas fast, jump anywhere with Ctrl/Cmd+K, and use the quick lists and My history.

Search finds notes, tasks, incidents and areas from one box, and takes you straight to them on the map. In the desktop workspace the same box doubles as a command palette, so one keystroke can also open a panel or start creating something. This page explains where to type, what is searched, and what you will and will not find.

  • Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on a Mac), or /, or the search box in the top bar opens the command palette in the desktop workspace.
  • On a phone, or in the classic layout, choose Search from the menu. It opens a full-height panel with a Search notes, tasks, zones… box.

Type at least two characters. Results appear after a short pause, so you can keep typing without the list jumping around. Press Esc to close.

What is searched#

ResultMatches on
NotesThe note text and the name of the person who wrote it.
Tasks and incidentsTitle, description, the creator's name and the assignee's name.
Areas and zonesThe note text, the creator's name and the severity.

Matching is case-insensitive and finds your text anywhere inside a word or phrase, so gate finds Main gate and aggregate. Each result shows an icon for its type, a title, and a short line with details such as priority and status. Up to 12 results appear in the palette, and up to 30 in the phone panel, where the list is folded to the first five with a +N more results row that opens the rest.

Administrators also see matching people (by name or email) and groups in the results.

Open a result#

Choose a result with the mouse, or move with ↑ and ↓ and press Enter. The map flies to the item and opens its panel: notes open the note, tasks open the task sheet, and areas centre on the shape. If the item has no place on the map, its panel simply opens.

The palette remembers the results you opened. With an empty box it lists them under Recent, kept per device, so a place you keep returning to is one keystroke away.

What you will not find#

Search follows the same visibility rules as the map. You never see a result you could not see on the map, and that is enforced by the server, not just hidden on screen.

  • Private tasks assigned only to other people do not appear.
  • Restricted users find only their own items and those of their own groups.
  • Archived notes are left out. Restore an archived note from the notes list first; see Notes.
  • Personal notes without a place belong to their author and are searchable only by them.
  • Guests cannot search at all.

Offline#

When there is no connection, search falls back to the copies stored on your device: the tasks, notes and areas that were loaded earlier. Offline matching also looks at area names. It only knows what your device already holds, so items created elsewhere since you went offline will not appear until you reconnect.
