The map, layers and views

Pan, zoom, tilt and rotate; switch venue plans and overlays on and off; use saved views, dark mode and your own location.

The map is where everything happens. This page explains how to choose what the map shows: base maps, event floor plans, the layer switches, filters, saved views, and the measuring tool. Every choice here affects only your own screen, apart from the shared views and shared dimensions that administrators and teammates place on purpose.

Map setup: base maps and event overlays#

Press L, or choose Layers in the top bar, to open Map setup. It has two sections.

Base maps#

Base maps are the background under everything else. You can turn several on at once. The available choices are:

ChoiceWhat you get
Wegenkaart (Protomaps)A sharp vector road map that the instance hosts itself.
Wegenkaart (BRT)The Dutch national road map.
Topografie (Esri)A worldwide topographic map with detail at high zoom.
LuchtfotoCurrent aerial photography.
Detailkaart (BGT)Large-scale Dutch topography with buildings, paths and water.
3D Gebouwen (3DBAG)Three-dimensional buildings. Shown only where the instance provides them; tilt the map to see them.

Some names are Dutch because the underlying data sources are Dutch. Your choice is remembered for next time. If an administrator has set a default, you see that until you pick your own.

Event overlays#

Event overlays are the site plans and floor plans for your event, drawn on top of the base map. Each one has its own switch. If the plan changes from day to day, an Active event day picker appears above the switches: choosing a day shows only that day's plans, so old and new drawings never stack on top of each other. In dark mode, plans are inverted so they read light-on-dark; see Settings and appearance.

Map layers#

Press F, or choose Filters, to open the filter panel. Its first section, Map layers, switches whole types of item on and off.

LayerContains
NotesNote pins.
TasksTask and incident pins.
ZonesSecurity zones.
AreasNamed areas. This one has three states: On, Lines (outline only, no fill) and Off. Tap it to cycle.
PowerzonesImported power areas. Listed only when the instance has them.
MeasurementsShared dimension lines.
MachineryLive positions of tracked machines. Listed only when machinery tracking is on.
360 photosPanorama markers. Listed only when that feature is on.

A Show all button appears once anything is switched off. These switches only change what your map draws; the data still arrives in the background, so switching back is instant.

Filters#

The same panel holds the other ways to narrow the map.

  • Note display chooses how notes look when you are zoomed out: Compact (small dots), Group notes (nearby notes share a count bubble) or With tasks (notes and tasks share a bubble).
  • My Work shows or hides three kinds of task: My tasks, Group tasks and Other group tasks. Users limited to their own tasks see a note saying so instead.
  • Groups lists the custom groups (roles) so you can show only some groups' items. A button restores my groups or shows everything. Restricted users only ever see their own groups here.
  • Tags filters tasks by their tags. It appears when tasks with tags exist.
  • Zones filters security zones by severity, and by Unresolved where it applies.

Saved views#

A view is a saved camera position: where the map is looking, the zoom, the rotation and the tilt. It also remembers which event overlays were switched on. Choose Views in the top bar (or press V) to open Views & orientation.

  • Save current view stores the view under a name for you alone. These appear under My views.
  • Administrators get a second button, Global, that saves a view for everyone. These appear under Global. An administrator can mark one global view as the default: people who have not opened the map before start there.
  • Tap a view to jump to it. The overlays it remembers switch on and the others off. If a view names a plan you are not allowed to see, that plan is skipped and the rest still applies.
  • Zones lists every named area, including those far outside the current view, and flies you to the one you choose.
  • Manage views renames or removes the views you own.

Your last position is remembered on each device, so reopening the app returns you to where you were.

Rotation and tilt#

Map rotation is locked by default so that a stray gesture does not turn the plan. Unlock it in the Orientation section of the same popover. The compass button in the map controls resets the map to north, and the 2D/3D button tilts it.

Measure distances and areas#

Press M, or choose Measure, to open the measuring tool. Tap the map to drop points; a live readout shows the total distance, and once you have three points it also shows the enclosed area.

ButtonWhat it does
UndoRemoves the last point. Backspace does the same.
ClearEmpties the path.
Close (×)Leaves the tool. Esc does the same.

Drag any point to adjust it. Lengths appear in metres, then kilometres; areas in square metres, hectares, then square kilometres.

Measure or Dimension#

The tool has two modes. In Measure, nothing is saved or shared; it is a scratch ruler. Switch to Dimension and a Place button appears: choosing it saves the line with its length label on the map for everyone. A placed dimension needs at least two points. Tap its label later to open it for editing; the person who placed it, and administrators, can move it or delete it.

Right-click and long-press#

Right-clicking an empty spot on the map (long-press on a phone) opens a small menu to add a note, task or area at that spot. See Notes, Tasks and Areas.
